NOTE:  I did NOT write this.  I found this in my travels on the interwebs, penned by an anonymous Bones fan.  However, I agree with most of the sentiments expressed herein and therefore thought it was worth sharing.

An Open Memo to all Bones Fans Attending SDCC 2012

Hey, buddy.  Yeah, you.  If you’re going to SDCC this year, you’re representing me as a fan.  So, please, for the love of everything, keep these things in mind.

1. If you’re a fan of Bones, in there, you represent all of us. Remember that. Don’t do anything stupid.

2. Don’t bring the panel members anything. They don’t need it.  This includes baked goods, custom shirts, and receipts for charitable donations you made on their behalf.

3. When you get to the Q&A, and they take questions, don’t ask stupid questions that have already been answered a gazillion times, like: 

A. Is Zack coming back?  Answer: Probably not, no.

B. Can I get my picture taken with your or can I get a hug or can I give you this?  Probably. But, you’re wasting valuable time here, so don’t.

C. Will [INSERT CHARACTER NAME] be back? The answer is always maybe. Again, don’t waste time.

D. Asking HH or SN a stupid question like “Why did you write the Hannah arc?”  You know it pisses them off.  Don’t do it.

E. How long will the series last? Answer: they have no idea.

F. What about fanfic…? Answer: They won’t comment.  The fandom’s relationship with them on this issue works best in its “don’t tell, don’t ask” form.  Leave it be.

G. Don’t ask trite already-asked questions, such as: What’s your favorite episode?  Were you surprised by the audience’s reaction to the storyline? Who’s the biggest joker on set? Where would you like to see your character go or do? What is up with 4:47? What’s the grossest thing you’ve ever done on the set with dead bodies, etc? What’s your advice to aspiring writers, actors, etc.? Answer to all these: Look on YouTube.

H. How does the series end? Answer: They might have a vague idea, but they aren’t telling.

4. When you get to the Q&A, do ask good questions.  Bonus points if you get someone to get a surprised/confused look when you ask the question. These might include:

A. To HH & SN: Do you ever want to do something very bad to cast or crew members who troll social media sites?

B. What is your opinion on the Bones Traveling Sweater?

C. Any question prefaced with, “As a writer” or “As a director” or “As a producer”…it lets the person answering to know which hat to put on and take you seriously.

5. Have a good time, but remember, you’re representing us all.  And when you go and/or you screw up, all of the Bones fandom will know thanks to text messages, Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube.  

So for once, let’s go out and do something different.
